Welcome Message from the Project Director

The Indo-west Pacific has long been recognised as the global centre of shallow water marine biological diversity and the South China Sea, which is located at the center of this marine biogeographic realm, therefore represents an area of globally significant marine biodiversity.

This significant Global Environment Facility project (32 million US$), implemented by the United Nations Environment Programme, represents the first attempt to develop regionally co-ordinated programmes of action designed to reverse environmental degradation particularly in the area of Dr. John C. Pernettacoastal habitat degradation and loss, halt land-based pollution and address the issue of fisheries over-exploitation. The purpose of this website is to ensure the wide dissemination of project outputs and information, and to facilitate the online sharing of information and examples of best practice between members of the project network. Please click here to learn more about the purpose of UNEPSCS.org, the site's intended audience, and efforts of the South China Sea Project to ensure the longer-term sustainability of this information resource.
